Northeast Harbor innkeeper and resident Charles K. Savage (1903 - 1979) designed both the Asticou Azalea Garden and neighboring Thuya Garden in the mid-1950s. These two major life works were created from plantings rescued from legendary American landscape designer Beatrix Farrand's dismantled Bar Harbor estate, Reef Point. The Asticou Azalea Garden which Savage designed and his crew of local workers assembled in a firepond across from his Asticou Inn came first. Within a few years of the 1958 opening of the Azalea Garden, Savage and his crew completed Thuya Garden, an English border garden and plantings in what was originally a small orchard behind Thuya Lodge on Asticou Hill.
